Do you want to learn data science from scratch?
Do you want to become a data scientist?
Or bring data science into your day-to-day job?
Then you are at the right place!
On Data36, you can find practical, hands-on and true-to-life data science tutorials!
Hi, I’m Tomi Mester, the author of Data36. I’ve learned data science the hard way. And I honestly think that’s the best way for you to learn it, too!
Learn data science the hard way!
Learning data science is not easy.
It will take a lot of work, a lot of energy and a lot of time from you.
I learned data science auto-didactically on the job. (I was lucky enough to be able to take an unpaid internship where I had real data science tasks and, well, great mentors, too!) I’ve been working as a data scientist since 2012 and I can tell you that data science is a very, very practical job.
On the other hand: I went to university. I was reading books and blogs, I was taking online courses… and I saw that most learning materials out there regarding data science are purely theoretical.
I hate that.
I won’t go on (another) rant about university education, or the online schools that give you only the illusion of data science knowledge. And I won’t talk about those “zero to hero with data science in 1 week” kind of courses either… I’ve talked about them enough in my newsletters anyway. 😉
So let me put it this way:
My #1 goal on Data36 is to provide you practical, true-to-life, and hands-on data science education. That’s the reason why I push you in most of my tutorials to set up your own data server, work with real data sets, create your own automations, experience the pain of data cleaning, write your own scripts from scratch, think about the business value of your analyses, and so on… Because these are things that you will have to do in real life, as well.
Learning data science is not easy. If you can’t accept this fact, then maybe Data36 and my learning materials are not the best choice for you. But if you are okay with learning data science the hard way, this learning period of a few months will be one of your best long-term investments.
Enjoy and…

My TEDx presentation
Here’s my TEDx presentation from back in 2013. It’s about an experiment I set up to understand whether or not QR-code stickers are good marketing tools… After crunching the data, I ended up learning about people’s sexual behaviour as well! How come? Check here:
Note: it’s in Hungarian – but with English subtitles!
